After reviewing the adverse reports submitted by patients and medical providers and the most current scientific literature, the Food and Drug Administration has concluded that there is not evidence that supports the use of transvaginal mesh in transvaginal organ prolapse surgery over traditional mesh repairs due to the potential for increased risk of complications for women undergoing repair procedures.

Questions of effectiveness of transvaginal mesh used in POP surgery repairs compared to traditional POP repair that doesn’t use surgery mesh.

• POP repair involving transvaginal apical or posterior surgery using mesh does not seem to have any additional benefits compared to traditional repairs performed without mesh

• Two random trials looked at multi-compartment surgery comparing mesh and traditional repair without mesh and neither trial found added benefits in terms of effectiveness with repairs using mesh. At this point long term outcomes are unknown as are potential future benefits or complications

• Three random trials that have analyzed posterior repairs using mesh revealed that repairs using surgery mesh did not provide an anatomic benefit related to the mesh

• Anterior repair surgery using mesh does seem to provide an anatomic benefit

• There does not appear to be any difference in quality of life improvement when comparing traditional POP repair that does not use surgery mesh and patients who have transvaginal POP repair using mesh
